WINE CULTURE
If we could turn back in time around 2500 years ago we could find here on Catalina’s Hill a strong Thraco Getic fortress that guarded the surroundings. On a 5 hectar surface, inside the fortress there were the dwellings of the master and his closest and down, at the foot of the hill were the ones of others, common people who cultivated the land. The discoveries inside the fortress brought convincing proofs about vine culture from Cotnari, during the times of Burebista (82 – 44 B.C.)
It is said that Cotnari as a name comes from an old handicraft, the ells of the barells (cot – ell, measure and ar – handicraftsman. In 1599 Cotnari was one of the biggest trade centers from Moldavia after Suceava and Bacau.
The firsat historical mentions reffering to Cotnari date from the 13th Century. Nicolaie Costin writes that Cotnari’s vineyards were famous before the foundation of Moldavia, in 1359 and A. D. Xenopol spoke about the existance of the vineyards from the area since 1288. Radu Rosetti went even further and mentioned the vineyard in 1250.
With the beginning of the 15th Century, the documents referring to Cotnari vineyard become substantial, during the reigns of Peter the Second (1449-1449), Steven the Great (1457-1504) and Despot Voda (1561-1563) when the vineyard reached its highest level of prosperity both by the size of the cultivated areas and by the quality of the wine.
The first official data regarding the cultivated surface from the entire vineyard date from 1830 when 500 acres from 720 the Cotnari region belonged to the local people.

Tradition
Today we celebrate with honour, the habits,
The wine’s day – holy liquor
Born from the fidgeted earth for people
In our vineyards, famous from since COTNARI REGION
Cotnary vineyard is part of the viticulture region of the Moldavian Plateau, situated mostly on the Harlau and Cotnari side, an important segment of the Great Moldavian Side. The renowned Romanian Academician Valeriu D. Cotea describes it „as one of the most famous wine-growing areas in our country”.
This region is unique due to the vine’s personality and to the sunny slopes, to the refinement of the white wines obtained here and most of all thanks to the people’s traditional love and caring for wine culture.
THE HEART OF COTNARI The Cotnari Company has been the heart of Cotnari vineyard since 1948. The local people’s love for the vine culture and the fruit has taught us to cherish every sunny grape and to share with others the joy of life.
The wine’s journey is long but full of rewards. We pemanently take care of more than 1100 vine hectares through top agricultural operations. Our specialists work in the company laboratories and the vineyard searching new varieties of vines or new wine blends.
The secret of the Cotnari wines’ exceptional quality is that the average yield per hectare represents only 70% up to 80% of the yield obtained by any other vineyard from Romania or other wine-growing countries. Thus, our company always chooses quality over quantity. We treasure our most successful collection starting with the 1957 one in the collection.
VINEYARD
The holy vineyard from Cotnari, named by Dimitrie Cantemir, represent the result of an ancient wine-making occupation. From old time until today, the vine has continuously embraced the soft hills and took advantage of the region’s characteristics. The vineyard is sheltered from local winds and cold air currents due to the air masses „foehn” phenomenon, which causes a heating process. In May – September period is characterized by low cloudiness, favorable to insolation, grape growth and sugar accumulation. The soils are extremely propitious for wine-growing, with a sandy-clayey composition, rich in humus and changeable bases. That is why, for example, Grasa de Cotnari has not adapted in to any other vineyard in Romania or the world.
„The vineyard has always been blessed with excellent association of wise people and nature”. (Mihail Sadoveanu)
TECHNOLOGY
Not long ago, around the beginning of the 20th Century, grape processing from Cotnari vineyard, for wine-making, was being made using an empirical method, using vessels, traditional methods and installation, some of them are considered today museum artefacts. The landowners prefer themselves to produce wine from the grape production. As well as the harvest, the wine-making joint the ludical and lucrative, well being and literary aspects as described by N.D. Cocea: Happy girls passed the grape baskets to the lads. These, by their turn, up on the off-handed ladders, discharged the amount in three enormous baskets. The baskets were flying in the air joint by yells and spiced jokes. The girls caught the baskets from the inertion. None of them was below. Their answer was the same, with funny jokes or with amounts of grapes thrown in the lads’ faces. Juices gurgled like the rain flows. The recipients were filling up by miracle. The wine cellar was like a beehive.
„An entire technology is used in the process of wine maturation and ageing, because authentic Cotnari wine it is not used in the year of the crop but two, three or even ten years after, when it reaches it’s true personality.” (Alecu Al. Floares)
The millennial tradition and the use of advanced technical systems blend for a higher purpose. During last year our company has promoted substantial investments in association with famous companies from Italy, Germany, Sweden. Due to these investments the capacity of the bottling station has increased, and the cooling plant, the installation for tartaric salts removal, the pl
