D.O.C. Murfatlar
The oldest and most important viticulture area in the Dobrogea region (Dobrudscha) in the extreme south-east of Romania, which is named after the place of the same name. The vineyards are located on hills near the Black Sea coast. The Murfatlar wine cellars were already mentioned by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC to 8 AD). Numerous archaeological finds of viticulture equipment from antiquity can be viewed in the Museum in Constanta and in the Viticulture Museum in Murfatlar. The state winery Murfatlar on the Black Sea also includes a research institute and, with 2,600 hectares of vineyards, is one of the largest Romanian wine-growing companies.
