The first information about wines in Romania comes from the Roman era in the third century AD. The oldest document about the vineyards of Recas comes from November 11th 1447 in documents attesting to the sale of vineyards by Ioan and Ecaterina Magyar to Mihail de Cioara, the count of Severin for 32 Hungarian gold Forints.
Vineyards areas and varieties grown
700 Hectares of active vineyards as follows:
- 150 Ha Table grapes, Victoria, Muscat Hamburg, Fuzz Ali, Caseloads d’ore.
- 550 Ha Wine grapes both from local varieties: Feteasca Regala, Cadarca, Mustoasa de Maderat and from international varieties: Chardonnary, Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kekankos/Lemburger.
Climate
The Banat region benefits from a mild continental climate, with a slight Mediterranean influence, mild winters and hot summers, long autumns and short springs.
Soil
"Terra-Rossa" iron oxide rich with chalk fragments, and argil streaks with low fertility - perfect for vineyards!
Vinification
The winery has been substantially modernized to include state of the art equipment and a processing capacity of 7000Hl of wine. The quality is constantly monitored and guaranteed by an international team of experts.
Results
Proof of all the elements mentioned above is in the more than 100 gold medals won by Recas wines at International and National wine competitions.
Exports
Romania is the 9th largest wine producer in the world, and Cramele Recas is strongly focused on bringing this potential to world markets. Currently the winery exports to 20 countries including: USA, Canada, UK, Germany, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Spain.
Tourism
On arrival in the heart of Banat, you will discover the vineyards of Cramele Recas and if you probe deeper you will discover the splendor of our underground caves, whose rustic brick and arches will offer you unforgettable visits. The old cellars dating from 1945 became on 23rd May 2003 a new reference point for viticulture tourism, an integral part of the "Romania Wine Country" and "Wine Route program". The Tasting Hall, nested 9 meters underground offers perfect conditions for professional tasting.
Vinotheque: Hosts the wineries treasury, with stocks of select wines saved from the most exceptional of vintages from the last 50 years.
Barrique Hall: From March 2003 the winery has invested in a Barrique storage facility where the best wines from each vintage are gently matured in small oak barriques of 225 L from French and American oak, giving the wine an outstanding smooth quality.
